karkkidakam*

The blue darkness unfurled,

Wind flew shattering the doors,

Trees swayed in the gust,

Clouds roared the rage

The rain of Karkkidakam,

Its again at my sky

The saddles of the skies,

The river of heaven,

The oceans hid in clouds,

The Ganges of Gods,

The rain of Karkkidakam,

Its again at my smeared patio

The lullaby that pours,

The fury that follows,

The smile, laugh and roars of rain,

She is falling, the blue rain,

The rain of Karkkidakam,

Its again on my tiled roof

Rivers grew ripples by ripples,

Vision blurred in the white rain mist,

Like ocean falling on earth,

Trees drenched, arms apart,

The rain of Karkkidakam,

Its again in my paddies

Grains of rain – the glittering drops

Angry wind – the lost chariot

Banging doors and flying roofs

Shivering windows and thirsty eyes

The rain of Karkkidakam,

Its again at my window

The open hair of Karkkidakam,

The broken pearls of bliss,

Pouring thick and through,

Sometimes slanting, sometimes straight,

The rain of Karkkidakam,

It again on my forehead

Ah, again..!

*Karkkidakam – the last month of Malayalam Calendar. Karkkidakam;  with its torrential rains, is a period of confinement and forced rest. While rain nourishes the tender paddy in the fields, people take care of their houses and themselves… the beginning of Mother Nature’s cleaning spree. Karkkidakam is the month of sacred rituals, ancestral worship and healthcare…

…and the rain.. the rain of Krakkidakam.. the rage of Karkkidakam.. Ah!!
